Beginning delivery of the first models in the late 1980's, the Mazda MPV was the Japanese automobile manufacturer's flagship minivan until 2016.

During its fruitful almost 30 years in production, the MPV model sold more than 1 million units worldwide.

Production took place in Japan for most of the time it was being built with several years of assembly taking place in China.

Early versions were offered with the choice of a 2.6 (later 2.5) liter inline-4 or a 3 liter V6 engine mated to a 4 speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission.

Then in 1999, the options were expanded to include many different variants including a turbo-diesel option popular in non-North American regions.

Manual transmissions were removed from the order sheet but did include sliding doors instead of hinged ones on the back to make it easier for access.

2006 saw the introduction of the third-generation model that was only sold in Japan and several neighboring countries.

Mazda optimized the car for those territories by moving the gear shift to the dashboard and offering smaller capacity engines popular in those markets.

2016 saw the discontinuation of the MPV line with no direct replacement, most probably due to the change in consumer demand towards crossover SUV vehicles like the newer CX-5.
