The A-Class first entered the market back in 1997. At its initial release, the model was situated in the subcompact class.
It later pivoted into the subcompact executive class with the release of the third generation in 2013.
This huge change in terms of styling was done so that the model could compete with the emerging popularity of the subcompact executive class. It was clear that Mercedes wanted to make the A-Class sportier and more youthful.
During its time on the market, a total of four generations were released. The latest of these came to the various markets in 2018. That said, it is hard to consider the first two generations to be the same as the modern ones.
Like most Mercedes-Benz, competition comes from its German rivals. These include the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3 Sportback. The Ford Focus and VW Golf also come to mind.
The A-Class has been sold in a variety of body styles. The most notable of these are the 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks.
However, the 3-door version was discontinued in 2012. There was also a 4-door sedan variant that was released in 2018.
There were various engine grades sold, consisting of the A160, A180, A200, A220, A250, A250 Sport, A250 AMG, and A45 AMG.
The A-Class has typically been fitted with engines between a 1.3 L inline-4 and 2.0 L inline-4. These are roughly the same sizes for both petrol and diesel options.
The latest versions of the model have been offered in seven trim levels. These are the base, SE, Sport, Sport Executive Edition, AMG Line Edition, AMG Line Executive Edition, AMG Line Premium Edition, and AMG Line Premium Plus Edition.
