From 1997 up until 2010, the CLK-Class was the name given to a series of luxury coupe and convertible vehicles.
The most similar vehicle on the road today to the CLK-Class is the E-Class from the same manufacturer, the two models share the same underpinnings.
In terms of size, the CLK-Class sits neatly in between the SLK and the CL (the name is evidently a mash-up of the two).
As a luxury coupe, the CLK-Class competed directly with other German powerhouse offerings such as the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 6 Series, the Maserati Coupe and the Audi A4 Cabriolet.
Filling a gap in the market, 1997 saw two versions, a 4-cylinder CLK 200 and the 4-cylinder supercharged 230 Kompressor.
Updated in 2000, a new instrument panel was added to keep up with its rivals, the bumpers’ styling was tweaked along with the skirt side panels and a full interactive steering wheel with all the car's important controls built into the wheel.
The second generation (codenamed C209 and the A209) was developed as either a hard top or a soft top.
Both rooves were fully retractable and could be lowered or raised automatically on the later models.
Numerous powertrains were built into the cars, from a choice of petrol or diesel, a customer could choose between a 2.6-liter V6, a 3.2-liter V6, 5-liter V8 or a 2.7-liter inline (the latter only, a diesel-powered engine).
Sales remained strong for the CLK-class throughout Europe and Mercedes enjoyed a consistent number of orders annually with the drop only really happening two years prior to the E-Class' debut.
