The X-Trail first made its debut as one of the first compact crossovers in 2000. Since its initial release, there have been a total of four generations to hit the various markets. The latest of these was unveiled in 2021.

As of the third generation, the X-Trail and Rogue became the same model in the North America market, which happened in 2013. Both of these models then received a modest facelift in 2017.

The model currently sits above the Qashqai and below the Pathfinder in terms of the Nissan SUV family.

As one of the oldest crossovers out there, it has had a long rivalry with the Toyota RAV4. Other competition typically comes from the likes of the Mazda CX-5, Skoda Kodiaq, and Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace.

Like most Nissan offerings, trim levels vary based on the region the model is sold, as well as the generation in question. The latest model comes in six trims for the UK market. These are the Visia, Acenta, Acenta Premium, N-Connecta, N-Tec, and finally the Tekna.

Powertrain options have typically included a variety of both petrol and diesel options. The petrol engines usually range between a turbocharged 1.3 L inline-4 through to the 2.5 L inline-4. Diesel options range similarly, between a 1.6 L inline-4 and a 2.0 L inline-4.

However, petrol engines were streamlined to just two choices and diesel engines were dropped altogether with the release of the new generation.

The release of the fourth generation also saw a petrol hybrid version of the X-Trail being unveiled. This version is powered by Nissan’s e-Power powertrain.

The latest transmissions for the X-Trail consist of either an Xtronic CVT or the single-speed gearbox found in the hybrid variant.
