Based on the Logan platform the Dacia Sandero started out as a supermini but morphed into a subcompact crossover SUV when it entered its second generation.

Car buying tastes have rapidly changed over the last decade and more and more people want crossover SUVs so moving into this category was a smart thing to do for the Romanian carmaker.

In a lot of the emerging markets such as Russia and Brazil, the car is sold under the sister brand of Renault using the same model name.

The safety rating for the first model wasn't great with an average of 4 out of 5 stars for most disciplines apart from those involving pedestrians where it scored 1 out of 5.

This all switched around with the introduction of the second generation model in 2012 when the car morphed into a subcompact crossover SUV - scoring 5 out of 5 stars for many tests and 4 out 5 stars for the first time for pedestrian safety.

A new addition for the second generation was the first Sandero RS trim which could propel customers from 0 to 60 in 8 seconds.

The hot hatch version of the car featured more aggressive styling and sporty features such as a 6-speed manual gearbox and driving aids like ABS and stability control.

In 2020 the third generation Sandero hit showrooms and is limited to a 1-liter gasoline engine with an optional turbo-charger - popular with Chinese car buyers.
