The release of the Yaris Cross in 2020 was almost inevitable due to the popularity of the original Yaris and the surging demand for crossover versions of popular models.
The international release of the model was staggered, with the Japanese and Australian markets receiving the model in 2020, while the European market was forced to wait until mid-2021.
The main differences between this and the original Yaris are a 30 mm taller ride height, as well as the more rugged exterior styling. It even shares the same wheelbase as the original.
Since its release, there has obviously only been a single generation.
Trim levels change depending on the region in question, but for the UK market, these options include the Icon, Design, Excel, and Sport. There is also an Adventure version available in certain regions.
All of these feature a 5-door layout with either FWD or 4WD depending on the trim level in question. It is also built on the GA-B platform.
The Yaris Cross is one of the smallest SUVs currently offered by Toyota, sitting between the Aygo X and C-HR.
Competition from other manufacturers typically consists of the new Ford Puma, Nissan Juke, Peugeot 2008, and even the Volkswagen T-Roc.
Powertrains for the model are rather straightforward. Toyota offers a 1.5 L inline-3 for the petrol and hybrid models. The hybrid version is coupled with an electric motor with a power rating of 59 kW for the front wheels and a second 3.9 kW rear motor.
Like most new offerings from Toyota, there is no diesel option at all.
These are coupled with a CVT or an eCVT for the petrol and hybrid versions respectively.
