First launched in 2008, the Hyundai i20 is a supermini model produced primarily for the European and Indian markets where it enjoys the strongest popularity. It first debuted at the Paris Motor Show in late 2008 and went into production for the 2009 model year. Since its launch, the i20 has gone through three generations, with the latest being the third generation launched in 2020. A sportier and more athletic i20N model was also released carrying Hyundai’s signature high-performance “N” badge.
The first-generation models used an entirely new platform that Hyundai invested heavily in developing it at its technical center in Russelsheim, Germany. The reason for such heavy investment was that the subcompact market in Europe is particularly fierce, especially in the face of such well-established competition like the VW Golf and Polo, as well as the Vauxhall/Opel Corsa, Mini Cooper, Renault Clio, Peugeot 208/308 and so on.
In its latest form, the i20 comes with a range of powertrain options, from 1-liter to 1.6-liter in regular gasoline, and a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder diesel option, too. The most powerful is the 1.6-liter turbocharged GDi paired with a 6-speed manual transmission that is used on the i20N model, released in 2020. This model has a top speed of 143-mph, and can manage 201-hp and 203 lb-ft of torque.
While other smaller Hyundai models enjoyed impressive safety scores, the i20 didn’t fare quite as well. Where the likes of the i40 received a 5-star rating in their Euro NCAP, the i20 only received a 3-star rating from Global NCAP, which while not the worst-possible result does offer something of a blow to the otherwise pleasing nature of the car.
Interiors on the i20 started out very simple, but have since evolved to include more advanced displays, larger infotainment systems, better-quality upholstery and much more.
