Originally named the CLS-Class, the CLS was a vehicle that existed in a number of forms created by the German car manufacturer Mercedes Benz.

An executive car since 2004, the CLS had four doors and was officially a fast-back sedan which was based on the E-Class platform.

Mercedes made the CLS available as an AMG which allowed for high performance and the ability to compete with cars such as the BMW 8 Series, the Gran Coupe, Porsche Panamera and the Audi A7.

2004 models were predominantly designed by Michael Frink (the designer also responsible for the CLK, C-Sport Coupe and the Maybach 57), as a sedan, but by the second generation, a four-door coupe was developed along with a five-door estate version.

Based on the Mercedes F800 concept car from 2010, customers could add in all-wheel drive and four years later a number of engine enhancements were made.

The third generation debuted in 2018 and Mercedes made the decision to drop all but the 4-door sedan from the CLS lineup. Again, all-wheel drive was removed, making the CLS a predominantly rear-wheel drive vehicle. The styling was given an overhaul, with the front end swooping into an aggressive grille (a design feature that spread across most Mercedes at the time), two main engine configurations could be purchased, the 2.9-liter straight-6 turbocharged diesel and the 3-literliter straight 6 turbocharged petrol.
