Originally the Impala name started its life off as a top-of-the-line trim for the Bel Air in the late 1950s.
It wasn't until 1959 that the name was put to its own model that kicked off its long and fruitful life-ending only recently in 2020 in its tenth generation of design.
Sales withered away with the release of the tenth generation in 2014 (auto manufacturers usually receive a boost after a new version is released) spelling the end for the Impala.
To take over the legacy the SS model from Chevrolet is now the successor in the North American market and the Holden Commodore in Australia/New Zealand markets.
During its 60+ years on sale, the car was classed as a full-size car and this was essentially caused its downfall.
As oil prices and taxes continued to rise decade-after-decade the average car buyer is flocking to more fuel-efficient options, making this larger car obsolete.
In recent years the car has seen heavy competition for other models such as the Buick Regal, Buick LaCrosse and the Cadillac XTS.
These models appeal slightly better to the main market who are still buying larger cars in North America - the older generation.
