As the MDX model from Acura kept growing it lost its "compact crossover SUV" classification and so the luxury wing of Honda introduced the RDX to take on that role.
When the company introduced the model in 2006 buyers found underneath was the same chassis used in the Honda Civic and Honda CR-V.
It wasn't until the third generation hit the showrooms in 2019 that the car gained its own dedicated platform not shared with any other car on the market.
Engine options have always been fairly limited, for 2 of the generations (including the current one) there was only 1 option available.
Not only was the engine choice limited but the transmission for all 3 generations was just one automatic variety.
Markets didn't seem to mind the limited choice of engines and transmissions though as sales have continued to climb year-on-year for the Acura RDX.
This could have been helped by the adoption of a smaller turbocharged power plant under the hood of the car rather than a large V6 like the car had previously been offered.
Smaller displacement turbocharged engines are more popular with Asian markets such as China who have set their import taxes based on engine size.
