The LS first made its debut all the way back in 1989. It has remained the flagship model of Toyota’s luxury sub-brand Lexus since then.
It was also sold in Japan as the Toyota Celsior until the Lexus brand emerged.
A total of five generations have been released during its time on the market. The latest of these was first unveiled in 2017. Lexus has been very proactive in keeping this model updated, so much so that the fifth generation even received a facelift in 2020.
Competition for the LS typically came from other executive sedans, as was intended by Lexus. These rivals included the Audi A8, BMW 7-Series, Genesis G80, and Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
The LS has typically been offered in just two grades. These ranged anywhere from the 350 to the 500. However, there was a 600h in the previous generation and the 500h in the fifth generation. Both of these are hybrid models.
The larger grade was also offered in Lexus’ high-performance F SPORT trim package that features a number of performance upgrades like more powerful engines.
It is worth mentioning that the LS almost exclusively featured RWD drivetrains that were powered by various V8 engines until the end of the fourth generation in 2017.
This changed when the fifth generation powertrains consisted of a twin-turbocharged 3.4 L V6 and one of two 3.5 L V6.
These powertrains were typically mated with various automatic transmissions. These were typically gearboxes with a lot of gears. The fourth and fifth generations were 8- and 10-speed respectively.
